Poster: William Tell Date: Dec 15, 2009 3:19pm
Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Tell's personal guide to Trolls...

OK, this is for the newbies and any other interested parties...CLIFF, Rob and Dire certainly don't need my defense, nor my approval (and I love the three of them for that), but some things posted today cannot go unaddressed ("undressed" would be SDH's department, thank you very much).

Why are R, C & D not trolls? Because over the lifetime (three to more yrs) of their posting here they have contributed numerous posts about the DEAD. EG, CLIFF has largely schooled me on EVERY early era show...not in a mean spirited way mind you, but with grace and dignity (yes, exactly THAT) so as not to embarrass me when I bring up something he covered in a prior post...Dire has offered to share shows with me on many occasions and Rob has done likewise. They have done this with others, and others, like Arbuthnot, the Champion in this regard, have returned the favor.

In my simple guide to Forum behavior, no matter how cranky you might seem with someone that raises your hackles you get a big fat "pass" if you have 1) posted more than 20 times on the DEAD, and 2) given shows to someone that asked.

Period.

Now, does this mean that the three of them these days don't engage in a fair bit of "nonDEAD" posts? Of course not...there isn't a person here, cepting LiA, that doesn't do this...Case closed.

Do they also regularly show a bit less decorum than a wimp like me? Well, so be it...if I can be called on the carpet for transgressions of a "too friendly to females!" nature, it only goes to show you can't please everybody all the time.

So, I wouldn't worry too much about current events, vis-a-vis "these posters use foul language!" and "these posters call other posters names!" and so on and so forth, or we might as well move the whole kit and kaboodle to the 2nd grade playground, another of SDH's strong points (right, Pat?).

By 2nd grade playgrounds are you insinuating something untowards in my behaviour vis-a-vis my preferences for those with whom I choose to spend my time? And by dropping my name are you then insinuating further that I may expect a visit from the local authorities? Either way, I, as always, feel honored to garner a mention in one of your more than elaborate musings.

Or, to put it more simply:

Exact-a-mundo! I figured it was about time you got your doo, maybe even doo-doo since we're sticking to the element-er-rie parlance, as it was absolutely hurtful to see you passed over by so many in listings of various sorts here at the Forum of late...ergo, my double mention to make certain you noted my reference, inclusion even, in all things Forum-esque.

How could Mr Furniture NOT rate recognition for significant contributions to the daily splinters and other wood fiber irritants this place provides? I will never think of a chair as a mere resting place for my fat ass; thanks to you, I will forever imagine it as the perfect rating device for a DEAD Show.

This contribution alone places you squarely among the round hole that this Forum represents in my pathetic web life. [Amos--hold the jokes that this metaphor so ably provides, eh? I know you want to...]

So, if you aren't ONLY a troll, all troll behavior is forgiven by you. That's funny Tell. Makes no sense, but its funny.
Thanks for participating, may you one day be the warden of a prison, where you can release anyone who isn't constantly a criminal.

Seriously, though, weren't we involved in the exchange about Jerry's mad skills? That was all DEAD related...

I actually used to post dead related, until cliff hucker, the fat little hobbit that he is, made me (aka suasponte173) into a troll bent on destroying him.

I guess I could post some dead again.
As for Garcia's mad skills - well, crap, he certainly had them, and they developed up till a certain point (not even going to pinpoint it, even to a year, as most seem to), and then they began the long downhill slide. He had a long distance to fall, so it took a long damn time.
If held by gunpoint and forced to answer, I would say 85 was the real beginning of the end. Sure, there were drug related flubs before that (there were drug related show flubs as early as the 72-4 pinnacle of perfection), but in 85.
Of course, as for his peak, I would say '77? So, I guess I did pinpoint like I said I wouldn't.

Now back to my regularly scheduled cliff jumping.

I used to have a purple and white horizontally striped shirt and was referred to as "Where's Waldo" for a time. A Where's Waldo rubber figurine with "Jim" written on the front even turned up and my kids thought it was hilarious.

"Pope o the Dump"...That has a nice ring to it, eh? But, not sure anyone had to die for it to happen.

So, if I was elected "Forum PM" (you have Midnight Sun and StStephen to thank for that), maybe I should step down and assume the moral compass position as Pope o the Dump. I already spend all my time PONTIFICATING, so it seems a natural enough progression.

Lets start with Vatican III: it is hereby decreed that tithing shall be reinstated (SBD pull day was the anti-tithing event) with any and all contributions dedicated to legal defense funds necessary to protect my good name whenever the so called "truth" comes out about my amorality.

i don't think she did (?) but i was on sabbatical when the PM biz started (believe it was some time before Mar/07)

been kicking around the net lately, found what i thought to be a good music theory forum, only to wind up witnessing an extremely nasty spat between two professors (using their real names too!) then i lurked on a local news forum, thought it would be good to discuss issues that directly affect us...ya right, TROLL CITY!

btw, sincerely hope i didn't trigger any of this latest buzz with that "cold lonely hwy" bs :(
got nothing against your friends, and me even casually suggesting more objectivity is in order is unfair and unrealistic...all the same, always admire how you, dire, BD and others can let go of grudges and move on (hope i'm allowed at least THAT much illusion?)

i'm not quite that far north, that lucky ol' sun just breaks the horizon these days, it's like having a dull headlight shining straight into your eyes for a couple of hours and without any apparent warming effect...and ya, sad to see those polar bears succumbing, vanishing sea ice, pcb's and all kinds of shit in their systems................

on a positive note, we spotted a Great Horned Owl outside our window a while back...ah, to listen to 3 or 4 of them call back and forth to each other under the stars and aurora on an otherwise silent night...now that's objectivity!

Hey, I have the same sense of it here; and have probably overstated my perspective, but really feel "close" a number of regulars, and don't really hold it against them even when "fighting" (?) among themselves...I know I get hot and bothered a little too easily, so I cut people that I KNOW are good hearted a lot of slack. They are probably sick and tired of hearing how tolerant I am...hey, I just like the guys and their contributions, so I wish all the others (well, really it's only one or two newbies!) would quit ragging on me to "hate them cause they were mean to me" and such.

Absolutely outstanding observation on the owls! Very cool; we had a pair nesting in the backyard for yrs, and hearing them call is always a treat...do you see snowy owls regularly? Only seen one--BIG! Very impressive.

One more thing(not to go Columbo on you or anything). The art of "keeping one's cool" is vastly underrated as a virtue.

"May I make a statement captain?" - the things we remember that get us through

i think it's possible (at least in theory) to remain true to your friends yet still impartial (famous last words spoken before entering the gladiator arena...or is this the alligator arena?)

even heavily moderated sites are full of venom, sometimes a carefully worded "polite" cutting phrase can be far more offensive than a simple, "fuck you too" (much easier to dismiss the latter as hysteria)

not sure about Snowy's, my wife is the owler, we almost never actually see any of them, probably because they have proportionately large expanses of wilderness to hang out in (no need to get close to us a-holes) ironically, you probably see a lot more of them (but likely hear and have less of them) i'm not even sure about the different calls, apparently some of the sub-species (if that is correct terminology?) can alter their call patterns (?) "I just know what sounds good"

agree with highflow, even though that "music dorks" tag really hurt...the truth can do that

Yep, I am sure no one here has a problem with you...and though we both agree with the "Golden Rule" approach to Forum Behavior, I find I am always explaining myself to trolls and newcomers ("why don't you hate Rob/Cliff/Dire, Mr Tell! They said something nasty to me!")...the fact is, no matter what these, and some other (not all), posters say, they have proven they are valued members here at the Forum, TO ME ALONE (ie, that's why I said it was "personal") many, many times by their kindess toward me and OTHER posters (ie, it's not just that they "paid me off" with CDs or some such...though checks and money orders are accepted), and with informative posts on the DEAD.

So, if there' a little tussling now and again, I just ain't gonna jump on the wagon to lay some trip on them as to "proper behavior"...I mean, what if LiA suddenly got mad at me and said this or that about me really pissed him off, and even used foul language--I doubt any of you would suddenly term him a troll or stop interacting with him...he's done too much good around here. Just an example, NOT an analogy.

I have heard that before from some natives (knew a couple guys from way back; 83 was a big yr with the 76ers finally winning). I also know how folks do like to "own" their derogatory but loving terms for local sites, sorta funny really...like in the Bay Area, we could always call SF "The City" (did you know Warriors uniforms had that on them once?) but hated it when outsiders called it "Frisco"...

You may recall, they tried. Long time owner Leonard Tose lost a ton of money at the casinos and considered an offer to move the team to AZ back in 1983 or 84. He ended up selling the team to a former resident of Philly, Miami car dealer Norman Braman who was initially hailed as a savior for keeping the team in town. He ended up being a terrible owner who preferred vacationing in France to actually signing his players to contracts, resulting in a huge number of holdouts and then with free agency the loss of players like Reggie White without even attempting to sign them.
